Our client Puzzlewood’s magical ancient woodland in the Forest of Dean was chosen as one of the official UK locations for HBO’s ‘Quest for the Throne’, a nationwide treasure hunt to celebrate the launch of the final series of Game of Thrones.
On 18 March 2019, HBO and Sky Atlantic launched the ‘Quest for the Throne’ in advance of the release of the highly-anticipated eighth and final season of Game of Thrones. This video was the first clue they posted with the instruction to ‘Seek the Weirwood in this Kingdom on Earth’.
HBO placed six thrones across iconic locations in the UK, each one hidden in landscapes worthy of Westeros. Fans were invited to track them down, discover clues and capture their own moment as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.
And where better to hide a throne than Puzzlewood?
With its twisting pathways, moss-covered rocks, secret caves and centuries-old yews, Puzzlewood has long been recognised as a setting that feels otherworldly. It’s no surprise that it has inspired storytellers and filmmakers for generations, from J.R.R. Tolkien to Doctor Who and Star Wars. Now, it’s also part of Game of Thrones history.
Visitors who discovered the Iron Throne at Puzzlewood during the campaign were able to sit upon it, take photos and feel like true rulers all while surrounded by one of the UK’s most enchanting natural landscapes.
The Quest for the Throne captured global attention, and we’re proud that Puzzlewood was at the heart of it. For fans of fantasy, film and folklore, Puzzlewood continues to be a must-visit destination.
Whether you come for the history, the scenery or the magic, Puzzlewood never fails to transport you to another world. And now, thanks to HBO, it will forever be linked to the legendary world of Game of Thrones.
It was a frenzied but hugely exciting time for those in the know. Our social media coverage reached around 1 million people! I’m sure HBO and Sky Atlantic reached even more though given how incredibly popular this show is.
