New Forest of Dean walking maps prove a huge success

Creative Walking Maps Forest of Dean Case Study Cover

This was a creative project that was close to my heart: the production of three new walking maps for the Forest of Dean.

My role was to lead the end-to-end project management, from coordinating route development and accessibility, to overseeing the illustrator brief, managing print production and planning the distribution and launch. It was a big piece of work with lots of moving parts, but seeing it all come together has been incredibly rewarding.

The maps have been out in the world for a little while now and I’m so thrilled with the response. We’ve had such positive feedback and it’s been wonderful hearing how people are already using them.

The designs have been especially loved. They are beautifully illustrated by local artist Becky Embling, colourful and full of character with the local flora and fauna you might see on a walk illustrated around each route encouraging people to stop and take time to enjoy nature. These maps aren’t just walking routes, they’re tools to inspire wellbeing, creativity and connection to place.

Since the launch, I’ve coordinated the distribution of the printed maps across the Forest and made them available for download online. It’s been wonderful to hear from walkers, families and community groups who have already started using them. Many have told us how grateful they are to have new accessible routes, how inspiring the creative prompts are and how beautifully designed they are.

It’s also been fantastic to see the press and media coverage roll in, from BBC Gloucestershire to local titles across the Forest.

For me personally, this project was about weaving together the logistics and the creative side, making sure the maps were technically accurate and accessible, while also delivering on the beautiful design and creative vision.

I can’t wait to see how many more people use the maps to discover (or rediscover) the beauty of the Forest of Dean.
